The Horizons at Georgia Tech team is putting the finishing touches on its summer learning program that will take place on the Atlanta campus June 9-July 18. Over 195 rising 1st through 9th grade scholars from the Atlanta area will be in attendance. As Horizons Giving Day approaches on May 14, Program Director Ebony Minter has announced the goal to raise $5,000 that can help fund high-quality activities to support academic achievement and healthy youth development.

Horizons at Georgia Tech preparing for summer programming for over 195 scholars.“The Horizons summer program at Georgia Tech is crucial for our scholars, providing them with opportunities to grow academically, socially, and emotionally,” she said. “The support we receive from Horizons Giving Day is vital in expanding our activities and ensuring each student can build confidence and achieve their full potential. We are deeply grateful for the community's generosity and commitment to our mission."

The year-round program is one of 11 Horizons Atlanta program sites housed in Expanded Learning Programs at Tech’s Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC). Now in its twelfth year, the mission of Horizons at Georgia Tech is to build long-term partnerships with scholars, families, communities, and schools to create experiences outside of school that inspire the joy of learning.

Horizons Giving Day is set for May 14. “We’re not just preventing summer slide; we’re reversing it. Our scholars join us each summer and are able to return to their home school with over 13.2 weeks of growth in math. That kind of progress takes partnership - from families, schools, and donors who believe in what’s possible when every child gets the right resources at the right time,” explained Minter.

Scholars spend six weeks at Georgia Tech, receiving remediation in math and reading, participating in problem-based learning activities, exploring Atlanta’s cultural landmarks, and learning how to swim at Tech’s Campus Recreation Center.

Scholars also receive support through after-school programming and family engagement events. Horizons at Georgia Tech partners with three local schools: Centennial Academy, Drew Charter, and Hollis Innovation Academy. Students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals and who are pre-identified by the partner schools are accepted into the program.
