The Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) will be hosting its inaugural National Summer Learning Celebration on July 13 to showcase and recognize all of Georgia Tech K-12 summer programs occurring on both the Atlanta and Savannah campuses. In summer 2022 alone, Georgia Tech hosted almost 20,000 K-12 students who participated in youth programs across departments that range from one-week activities to month-long opportunities.
“I am so excited that we are celebrating National Summer Learning Week at Georgia Tech. Summer learning programs offer youth a safe place during the summer with fun, enrichment, and academics,” said Sirocus Barnes, senior program director for Expanded Learning Programs at CEISMC.
According to the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), more than half of U.S. students experience summer learning losses five years in a row. To combat this, NSLA is using initiatives, such as National Summer Learning Week, to help bring awareness of the impact that summer learning has on students. The goal of this week is to emphasize the importance of preserving a safe and healthy summer filled with learning, making certain that students return to classrooms well-prepared.
The celebration will start at 10 a.m. in room 144 Auditorium of the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons. The hour-long event will include remarks from Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera, and a showcase of student works from this summer’s campus programs. An outside reception with light refreshments will follow. Attendees can RSVP for the celebration by clicking here.
The showcase will feature:
- Judah Allen, a participant in Horizons at Georgia Tech program for the past nine years,
- Anjali Yanavajhala, a high school student who has been involved in activities in two Tech research labs this summer, and
- A group of high school students who are engaged in this week’s Georgia Tech Robotics Summer Institute with Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Aaron Young.
In addition, the entire campus community is invited to hand-write welcome notes and words of encouragement for K-12 students who will attend summer programs at Georgia Tech next year. Printed postcards will be available at the event and can also be requested by clicking here. Electronic notecards can also be submitted by clicking here.
