CEISMC STEAM Workshops

Is your student interested in Technology? Do they love Engineering and Math? Do they want pursue a career in the STEAM fields?


If they answer yes to any of these questions or has a general interest in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design and Mathematics) fields, then STEAM Workshop is for you!

What are STEAM Workshops?

Georgia Tech's CEISMC STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Workshops are workshops for students in 6th through 12th grade. STEAM Workshops encourages students to study and pursue a career in the STEAM fields by exposing them to many different topics of science and engineering along with a technology. During each session, students participate in a variety of hands-on activities that promote creativity, problem solving, and teamwork in 6th through 12th grade students.

Exploring the World of Micro:bits

Grades: 6th - 8th
Cost: $20

Learn how to make your own playable games on the handheld micro:bit. This session will teach you basic block coding, and how to control several input/output devices including buttons, LEDs, and an accelerometer.

*The purchase of additional materials is required for this program which are not included in the registration fee. 

Requirements:

  • Laptop or Computer, (windows, mac, or chromebook), internet access, and headphones.

Celebrating the Art in STEAM

Grades: 6th - 8th
Cost: $20

Art is about using creativity and imagination to increase the development of STEM’s essential skills, as well as enhancing flexibility, productivity, responsibility and creativity. In this session, participants will engage in art projects that fosters creativity and connects to STEM.
 
SUPPLY LIST 
  • Recycled Cereal box
  • Scissors
  • Plain Shirt (clean)
  • Craft Paint (Bright Colors Preferably) 
  • Fabric Medium 
  • Cup
  • Spoon
  • Clear Tape
  • Packing Tape 
  • Optional:  Iron and light cloth

Requirements:

  • Laptop or Computer, (windows, mac, or chromebook), internet access, and headphones.

Engineering Challenge - Bridges

Grades: 6th - 8th
Cost: $20

What is the difference between Suspension and Beam Bridges? Discover the answer while building the two different types of bridges.

SUPPLY LIST 

* Box of drinking straws

* Masking tape or painter's tape

* Thread

* Scissors

* Paperclips (4). At least two of the paperclips should be large ones.

* Paper cup, at least 8-oz.

* Pennies (at least 350). Alternatively, you could use other coins, such as quarters (at least 150), as long as you use all of the same type of coin.

* Metric ruler or tape measure

* Chairs, tables, or desks that you can arrange to build a bridge between (2)

*Paper for notes

Optional: Scale, accurate to 1 g, such as the digital pocket scale or food scale

App & Game Development

Scary Circuits

Grades: 6th - 8th
Cost: $20

Get into the Halloween “spirit” by creating these fun light-up paper circuits. These projects are not only fun but educational. Participants will learn how to create different kinds of conductive circuits using copper tape, LEDs and a coin cell battery.

  • White Copy Paper (Card Stock can be used if you home printer can be used for this weight paper)

Neuroscience: The Brain

Grades: 6th - 8th
Cost: $20

Explore the mysteries of the brain through neuroscience. Participants will learn you will learn the different parts of the brain and what they do for you every single day.

3D Model Future Design

Grade: 9th - 12th Grade

Cost: $40

Turn the light on with 3D modeling. In this project, attendees will design a desktop lamp, attach a canvas of the lampshade profile, create a parametric solid model of the lampshade and stem, create a sculpted free form body of the stand, assemble the lamp, create orthographic drawings, and export an STL file of a component for production on a 3D printer.
